How to Remove Wallpaper

Removing wallpaper from your home allows you to repaint a wall or apply new wallpaper. While it is not a hard process once you get started, knowing how to remove wallpaper the right way can save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run.
First: Clear the wall
Remove all of the switch plates, furniture and any wall hangings before you start. Then, cover the floor with a tarp so that your mess is easy to clear later on.
Second: Get out that putty knife
With good technique and some luck, you can remove the wallpaper without any chemicals. Find the seam, and shimmy your putty knife under the sheet of paper. Slowly peel it back at a 45 degree angle. The sheet of wallpaper should come off in one piece, just like it went on. If this is not the case, go on to the next step.
Third: Score and moisten
If the paper does not peel easily, get a wallpaper scoring tool from your local hardware store, and score the paper into small sections. Then, use a sponge to moisten the edges of these newly created seams. Alternatively, you can use a paint roller to roll water onto a large section.
Fourth: Peel it back
Once the wallpaper is wet, start peeling again. Pull the paper from the corner at a 45 degree angle. If it still does not budge, try applying more water and allowing it to soak for longer, or add wallpaper peeling chemicals to your water mixture for faster results.
